Propane
When used as a home energy source, propane gas fuels a variety of systems and products. It offers homeowners reliability, cleanliness, improved performance and, on average, costs half as much per BTU as electricity. Propane is the multi-use home fuel source because it not only powers your heat and hot water; but cooking stoves, fireplaces and even pool and patio appliances. Perhaps most importantly it comes directly from Depew Energy, your local supplier.
There are several unique benefits to using propane. Propane is produced in America. Almost 90% of the propane used in the United States is produced right here - domestically. And, therefore, reliability is very high with minimal dependence on foreign suppliers. Propane is also the most universal of residential fuels being able to power a wide range of appliances from a single fuel source. Propane is also eco-friendly; as a burned fuel it meets all clean air energy standards put forth by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Propane Safety
Propane has a long-standing history of safety. It is also highly regulated which helps support propane's safety record. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) has set standards for propane use and storage. Propane is naturally odorless, colorless and non-toxic, although a scent is added to detect if a leak has occurred.
What to do if you smell propane:
- Do not turn any devices ON or OFF. This includes light switches, phones, computers, flashlights or appliances.
- Immediately instruct all inhabitants to leave the home or commercial building.
- Do not try to find the source of the leak.
- Use a phone or cell phone outside of the building or area that the propane was detected and notify Depew Energy.
- If the propane is detected outside - preferably move upwind from the detection location and call Depew Energy.
Other Safety Tips:
- Propane appliances should have proper circulation of air at all times.
- The flame should burn blue in color. A yellow or orange flame may indicate poor venting or combustion.
- Keep flammable or combustible materials away from propane appliances and storage tanks.
- Use propane appliances for their original designed use.
- Never use cooking stoves for heating.
- Always maintain a fire extinguisher in your home.
